Part 1: Think about a public argument that you’d like to make for WP1. What issues do you care about what? What would you like to advocate for or against, and why?
In my MP1, I would like to write about gun control. I started considering this problem when I first came to the USA because there it is illegal to own personal guns in my country. I agree with the idea of gun control for the safety of US citizens.
Part 2: Looking ahead to WP1, you’ll need to write a Letter to the Editor (actually two of them!). Take a look back at the 3 examples that you collected for PB1A. What “moves” (decisions, techniques, or strategies) did these writers made which you’d like to consider using in some way for your WP1 assignment.
Look back to the three letters to the editor I chose, there are some "moves" that writers use to enhance their letter. The writer use impressive evidence to prove that it is bad for health to smoke from a young age. "It is a fact that secondhand smoke is a health hazard. It contains more than 4,000 chemicals."(Connie Kerr) Then, the strong words that writer use to convince audience such as "I believe","it is a fact that..."and "I am a firm believer".
Part 3: Evaluate these three Letters to the Editor: Who do you think wrote the best LTE, and why? What “didn’t work” and why? As you answer these questions, think about the intended audience of each piece.
I think the letter wrote by Connie Kerr is the best LTE because they writer use clear structure and intensive evidence to support his expression of his opinion. The target audience is workers in smoke environment and government. So the writer use more formal language to claim his opinion which can convince the reader in a effective way. But in the other two letter to the editor the writer doesn't use a lot of examples or evidence to prove the ideas they said. And the language is informal than the one Connie Kerr wrote.
